On Monday, January 1, the United Kingdom's Home Office announced the commencement of its policy to prohibit Nigerian students and other international students from bringing their dependents through the study visa route.
This information was shared in a post on X, formerly Twitter.
The Home Office clarified that only postgraduate research or government-sponsored scholarship students would be exempted from this new policy.
"We are fully committed to achieving a significant reduction in migration. Starting today, new international students will no longer have the option to bring family members to the UK. Postgraduate research or government-funded scholarship students will be exempt," stated the Home Office.
It is worth noting that in May 2023, the United Kingdom implemented a law restricting Nigerian students and others studying in the UK from bringing family members as dependents, except under specific circumstances.
