A veterinary technologist at the Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Osun State, tragically lost his life while attempting to rescue a colleague from a lion attack. The incident, which occurred at the university's zoological garden, resulted in the death of Mr. Olabode Olawuyi.
According to Mr. Wole Odewumi, the Chairman of the National Association of Non-Academic Staff of Universities at OAU, the lion first attacked a woman who also worked at the zoo. Olawuyi intervened to free her, assuming the lion would recognize him. However, this only seemed to enrage the animal further, as it turned its attention and aggression towards Olawuyi, mauling him.
Despite efforts to save him, Olawuyi succumbed to his injuries before reaching the campus health center. The woman who was initially attacked is currently receiving treatment and is in stable condition.
In response to the incident, the university has closed the zoological garden. A mourning procession was held in honor of Olawuyi, and the university management has met with his family to offer condolences and support.
Odewumi stated, "We held a mourning procession in honor of the deceased this morning, and members of the management addressed us after that sober event. The management promised to take necessary action."
The institution's management confirmed that staff members present at the scene did everything possible to rescue Olawuyi, but were unable to do so as the lion had a firm grip on him. The zoo remains closed, and the management has ensured that the family of the deceased is supported during this difficult time.
