Renowned Nigerian Playwright Wole Oguntokun, Passes Away at 56


Renowned Nigerian playwright and theatre director, Wole Oguntokun, has passed away at the age of 56. Oguntokun, who was also a lawyer, died on Wednesday. Film director Kayode Peters shared the news on his Instagram page Thursday afternoon.


Peters remembered their collaboration, highlighting Oguntokun's impact on his career. He directed Oguntokun's first performance story, "Who is Afraid of Wole Soyinka," at various theatres, including the prestigious Muson Centre, attended by Wole Soyinka himself. Peters also mentioned their work on DBN TV's first comedy series, "Crossworld Blues," which Oguntokun produced and he directed.


Born on July 15, 1967, Oguntokun was also a board member of Theaturtle, a Canadian theater company. He graduated from Obafemi Awolowo University and was known for his involvement in producing and writing TV sitcoms such as "Crossworld Blues" aired on DBN TV in 1999 and "Living Free" on MBI television in 2002.


Oguntokun's passing coincided with World Theatre Day, adding a poignant layer to his legacy in Nigerian theatre. His contributions as a playwright, director, and mentor have left a lasting impact on the Nigerian theatre community.
