Yaba psychiatric hospital Admissions Skyrocket by 100% in 2023

The Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Yaba, recorded a 100% rise in the admission of psychiatric patients in 2023, as disclosed by the hospital's Chief Medical Director, Dr. Olugbenga Owoeye. This information was shared during the Annual Score Card presentation titled "A Day With the Medical Director," held by the hospital in Lagos on Wednesday.

Dr. Owoeye highlighted that the overall number of new cases saw a 7% increase, with a 3% rise in follow-up patients, both male and female. He attributed the surge in admission cases to the escalating prevalence of mental health conditions in the country, stemming from current economic challenges and other socio-economic factors.

In his words, "In 2023, there was a 3% increase in the total number of patient attendance. New cases attended saw a 7% uptick, a notable contrast to the absence of any increase in 2022. Additionally, we observed a 100% surge in admission cases, with a 10% increase in drug abuse cases and a corresponding 10% reduction in discharge cases."
