ASUU Suspends Planned Strike in Akwa Ibom State After Governor's Intervention

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has decided to suspend its planned industrial action in Akwa Ibom State following a meeting held at the Government House in Uyo. Governor Umo Eno intervened to address the concerns raised by the union.

According to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Umo Eno, Mr. Ekerete Udoh, on Wednesday, February 7, the governor convened a meeting with a cross-section of labor leaders from Akwa Ibom State University at the Government House in Uyo. During the meeting, the governor promised to address issues such as the offsetting of the 13th-month salary bonus, providing three months of palliative measures, and initiating the construction of strategic roads within the main campus at Ikot Akpaden.

Governor Eno charged the labor leaders to collaborate closely with the government to ensure the delivery of democratic dividends to the people of Akwa Ibom State. He emphasized the importance of the university as the pride of the state and urged the university's management to utilize internally generated revenue for various tasks, assuring that the government would continue to provide monthly subvention as required.

Led by Comrade (Elder) Sunny James, Chairperson of the Nigerian Labour Congress, Akwa Ibom State Chapter, and Dr. Inyang Udosen, Chairperson of ASUU AKSU chapter, among others, ASUU leaders commended the governor for his "labor-friendly" approach. They expressed gratitude for his willingness to address the contentious issues and announced the suspension of the planned strike.

"We thank the governor for being a labor-friendly governor and for promising to address some of the contending issues. We will no longer continue with our planned strike since the governor is willing to address a number of the contentious issues," the statement noted.
